Jensen PLUS was engaged by Tanunda Lutheran Home Incorporated to assist them with masterplanning, landscape design and development approval for a new retirement village at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley of South Australia.

Cross-disciplinary review of our initial site and housing design options was a focus of the design process undertaken in collaboration with the client, architect, engineer and Jensen PLUS. On resolution and agreement for the masterplan Jensen PLUS was able to prepare the landscape for the project.

A high quality public realm for the residents was a priority as was the desire to create a ‘shared’ street environment with no kerbs or similar barriers. This resulted in a distinct material palette for the roads and footpath with tree planting being utilised in enabling traffic calming while improving aesthetics.

Proposed amenities include exercise stations, a small playground for visiting families and several secluded areas for repose all within a linked series of pocket parks. A larger and more active recreation space surrounds the proposed community centre and includes a stormwater swale and detention basins. These areas for stormwater treatment will be vegetated with riparian and amenity plant species creating a high-quality environmental and landscape design.
