Five minutes with Nina

In early September 2023, we welcomed Nina Phillips to the Jensen PLUS team. Nina joins us as Senior Landscape Architect and brings with her a wealth of experience, knowledge and energy.

Nina hit the ground running, diving into an array of projects and working closely with clients, but we managed to capture five minutes to have a chat about her career aspirations, joining the Jensen PLUS team and what she hopes to achieve for our clients and their communities.

What ignited your passion for a career in landscape architecture?
Being imaginative as a child, I always had an interest in being creative; whether through art, writing or design. But the landscape subjects I undertook at university as part of my studies was what piqued my interest in landscape and founded my passion and motivation to make a positive impact to outdoor spaces.

What project would you consider to be a career highlight so far?
One of the most interesting projects I worked on was a skate park and public space targeted for young people. The key element of this project was the consultation with the skating community which made all the difference to this becoming a successful project for the community and visitors.

What do you consider to be the most valuable qualities that you bring to the Jensen PLUS team and our clients?
I have a strong skillset in verbal and written communication, coupled with my extensive experience in engaging with communities and the public. I also have excellent attention to detail ensuring thorough reviews in design work and am effective working as part of a team to ensure the best possible outcome for every project and client.

Meaningful client and community engagement is vital to deliver exceptional and something the Jensen PLUS team pride ourselves on. How will you support these essential activities as part of your projects?
I firmly believe that consultation is a critical element to the success of projects. I have extensive experience in community consultation and engagement, from preparing and facilitating activities and reference groups, to day-to-day communication with members of the community, addressing concerns and obtaining feedback.

Having been previously involved in and collaborating with focused user groups, I bring a sensitive approach to engagement and my tailored communications ensure it resonates clearly and effectively with target audiences.

What drew you to Jensen PLUS and the team?
As well as the diverse range of projects, Jensen PLUS has values that align with my own personal and professional values, which is incredibly important for me. In addition, it’s extra special to work within such a creative team environment!

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy all aspects of the design process, but ultimately, I strive to make a positive impact on communities and the environment.

What are you looking forward to as part of your role?
Currently I am looking to develop further into my senior role and continue professional development through networking and other learning and professional development opportunities. I’ve already met so many clients but can’t wait to meet and work with more!
