Solomontown Beach + Riverbank Precinct, Port Pirie

The Riverbank Precinct project seeks to provide a vibrant and connected foreshore open space, including an upgraded promenade path which raises the finished surface of the walking path to 3.4m AHD to assist with flood mitigation, and disability access.

Designed to strengthen the riverfront as a destination for young people, families and community groups, the precinct incorporates a range of active and passive recreation opportunities. These include a new playground, pump track, basketball area, boardwalk and the new Solomontown Beach Shelter.

Jensen PLUS worked closely with Port Pirie Regional Council, Tonkin and project partners to guide the project from concept and community engagement through to detailed design.

Replacing a deteriorated and underutilised structure, the new beach shelter introduces a series of carefully positioned shade sails over tiered seating. Integrated steps and ramps provide improved connections between the promenade, beach and jetty.

The result is a safe, flexible and inviting space that supports gathering, relaxation and informal recreation, strengthening connections to the waterfront and encouraging greater community use of the foreshore.

Community engagement has been a strong feature of the design process including successful consultation at community markets in early 2023.
