Johnsons Beach Master Plan

Johnsons Beach is a charming headland, beach and recreation area at Penguin in northern Tasmania. The aim of the master plan was to adopt a placemaking approach, enhancing the precinct while retaining the qualities that make it locally loved. An exception to this context is a desire to develop a concept for a replacement recreational boat ramp.

Early community engagement and site analysis identified the importance of maintaining the natural coastal character, reserving views from The Nut (a natural raised formation on the coast), improving accessibility, and strengthening connections between recreation, tourism and community uses.

The master plan uses a placemaking approach called the “Power of 10”. This is a concept based on the idea that places are most successful when people have a wide range of reasons to be there.

Responding to this, the master plan describes 10 improvement projects that improve public spaces, recreation opportunities and visitor experiences. Projects include an enhanced coastal path, lookout decks, public art opportunities, upgraded play and picnic areas, improved boat ramp functionality, interpretive storytelling, lighting, seating and wayfinding.
