Alberton Railway Station is one of the oldest railway station buildings in Australia. It is one three intermediate stations built along the Adelaide to Port Adelaide steam railway, opening in 1856. Many original features of the building remain, including its arched doors and windows, red cedar panelled ticket office, fireplaces and chimneys.
The station was heritage listed in 1981. After its original use as a ticket office and waiting room, the station building was used for many years as a hair salon. The station building has now been restored to reactivate the building as a community meeting space, operating alongside the still operating railway station. Restoration and upgrades to platforms are included in the project.
Working with other consultants including architect / project managers Habitable Places, Jensen PLUS provided planning services to secure planning consent in 2025 for the change of land use. Tricky planning issues related to the heritage significance of the site, land use integration, and addressing car parking policies (unusual given the rail station location, and car-free historic context of the site).
