American River Place Plan

American River is a small and scenic township on Kangaroo Island overlooking Pelican Lagoon, which is an important fish hatchery and bird sanctuary. It is a popular holiday and retirement destination and its community is highly engaged and involved in the town’s future.

Jensen PLUS was engaged to work with Kangaroo Island Council and the American River community to plan for the modest and strategic growth of the township, and to develop ideas for the future look, feel and functionality of American River.

The project methodology focused on techniques to include community genuinely in the planning for their town, which included early engagement and several community meetings.

In August 2022, Jensen PLUS facilitated a successful two-day co-design workshop in American River with community members and key stakeholders. The workshop identified several opportunities for developing a marine precinct, affordable housing, a vibrant village centre, and other projects to support American River’s future as a 'welcoming, tranquil and connected place’.

At its meeting on 8 August 2023, the Kangaroo Island Council endorsed the American River Place Plan and are proceeding with plans to begin implementation.

Ian Hart, Director Community Development at Kangaroo Island Council, said the council was impressed by the level and quality of community engagement activities carried out by Jensen PLUS to inform the development of the Place Plan.

"American River has grown organically over the years which means the success of the project relied heavily on council working collaboratively with the community and ensuring stakeholders were a key part of the process."
