A Return to Nairne
We were in the Adelaide Hill’s town of Nairne last week on a warm, spring-like afternoon - the kind of day that makes you want to slow down and enjoy a main street. And that’s exactly what we did.
It’s been ten years since Jensen PLUS worked with Mount Barker District Council on the ReNew Nairne Mainstreet Strategy, followed later by detailed streetscape design work for Main Road. It’s great to come back and see what’s taken shape since.
All of the town’s public realm upgrades are looking good - footpaths and landscaping and gathering spaces. It was particularly good to see the Chapman’s site - once a meatworks and long derelict - now home to shops, services, gyms and the huge Tin Shed Distilling. And people!
The Chapman’s site has become the kind of destination that draws people right through the main street, past buildings and businesses new and old, just as we all hoped it would.
Credit to Council, and to the many business and property owners who’ve backed the town and put time, money and energy into Nairne. The result is a stronger, more connected main street. Great to see some local urban design strategies and concepts paying off. Well done Nairne!
