A team led by Jensen PLUS was appointed by the City of Port Lincoln to undertake the Port Lincoln Precincts Master Plan, to ‘deliver an overarching Master Plan’ for the CBD, Foreshore and Marina, all prominent and very different places around the city. The challenges and opportunities of each location varied, but the directions in the Master Plan all aligned with Port Lincoln’s established vision for “A progressive, vibrant and safe coastal city that is an attractive place in which to live, work and grow”.

Eight Master Plan strategies were developed, involving the Port Lincoln Foreshore, a Marina refresh, wayfinding that included the CBD-marina link, streets for people, targeted public realm improvements, an art + cultural framework, a CBD urban renewal, and implementable projects that make a difference city-wide. The concept of the foreshore was designed to make the jetty node area an activated space, with safe water play areas and the integrated Tuna Poler sculpture of which the design complemented.

The Tuna Poler Statue was a pilot project of the Master Plan to reinforce and demonstrate to the community that progress was occurring and to test community responses. The Tuna Poler statue furthers the cause of good planning by injecting interest and life into the public realm while allowing the stories of Port Lincoln’s community to be celebrated. The new space includes the statue on an elevated platform, integrated seating, planting and feature paving.

Since endorsement of the Master Plan and implementation of the Tuna Poler Statue the project has been awarded the 2020 PIA SA Best Planning Ideas (Small Project) and Planning Minister’s Awards. A fantastic achievement for Port Lincoln which sets high standards for the next stages of implementation, Liverpool St and the Town Jetty Activity Node.
